Pitching your business in 8 steps

It is essential that people need to believe in you and your business before they show any interest in your services and products.

I have identified eight simple steps to pitching your business persuasively.


1. Be confident

Confidence makes it easier for people to believe in you and your business. Do not forget to Smile, make eye contact, use the stage with purpose. Your gestures should compliment the word and tone of voice you use; relaxed and confident.


2. Practice, Practice and Practice

Practice makes it perfect. So, practice your business pitch in front of the mirror, family, friends, colleagues and anyone who will listen. Remember that people lose interest in long presentations so keep it brief.


3. Invite them to ask questions

Clarify your unique selling points; your audience needs to understand why they need to choose your company over other competitors. There are two types of the audience; investors and customers. Investors will be interested in how you plan to make money; customers will be more concerned with the benefits to them.

Give your message clear and precise, put yourself into above two types of audience and be prepared to answer any questions they might ask. Listen to what they have to say and answer their questions clearly and calmly.


4. Focus on your solution

Show awareness of your market, customer expectations and your competition during your speech. Show confidence and demonstrate that you know what their market strategy is and compare your product and services with the others on the market. What are you proposing? What problem will you solve? Why should they invest or buy from you? Outline your key messages swiftly and avoid lengthy explanations.


5. Do not use technical terms or abbreviations

Be clear, precise and avoid any jargon when describing your service or products. Don't use technical terminology unless your audience has specialist knowledge.


6. Keep your calm at all times

Sometimes people in your audience may act differently; they might quiz your knowledge or pretend to know more than you in your subject. Don't be defensive and open; if you don't have an answer, admit you don't know and offer to find out.


7. Impress with your Closing

Thank your audience for their time and exchange business cards and any marketing material. If they have any interest or further questions, ask the best way to contact and offer them to a call back to arrange an appointment accordingly.


8. Take notes and improve

Following the meeting and while it's fresh, make notes of what worked well? What didn’t? How your audience reacted? Their key questions or maybe critical comments. It would be best if you prepared to review and amend partial or full speech for the next time to make sure that you learn and adapt accordingly.
